From 200 to 1450 the area was inhabited by the Hohokam Indians, a peaceful and innovative tribe that brought irrigation into the area. Spanish missions and a fort were established in the 1700s and early 1800s. The area came under Mexican control in 1821 until it was sold to the US in 1854. In the early 1800s the Southern Pacific Railroad completed the last leg of the Transcontinental Railroad that had been worked on for decades. During the Civil War, Sahuarita was a confederate territory in 1861 and 1862 till it was captured by the north and became part of Arizona. Agriculture became a big business for the area in the early 1900s. Cotton was the main crop for 4 decades until synthetic fabrics lead farmers to switch their main crops to pecans. The area became a major center for military training during the 1940s. Sahuarita is home to the Titan Missile Museum and the Titan 2 missile, which remains on standby as a deterrent to foreign aggression and a constant reminder of the cold war.
